Now, this, is what a bakery should look like (see below).  Thanks to Wes Anderson and his The Grand Budapest Hotel team, I just spent an hour and 40 minutes seeing my fantasy bakery and other visual delights on a big screen.
Screen-Shot-2014-03-19-at-10.26.20-AMI am a little late on finally seeing it, but I will make up for that with my adoration and praise of the film.  I won’t go into the plot, but I will tell you the art direction is like nothing I have ever seen. I can’t stop thinking about it. In the film, the “bakery” pictured above is called Mendl’s.  It turns out that Mendl’s Bakery does not exist. That is not a surprise.  However, I read they shot the bakery scenes at Pfunds Molkerei, an actual creamery/dairy shop in Dresden.  Yay for pleasant surprises!  I found myself desiring more information on every aspect of this film, so naturally filming locations were of interest. Click on locations where it was filmed to read more.

The art, production, and set design paired with a well told story (including excellent writing, directing, and acting) is what makes this an outstanding film.  Click here to read Dissolve.com’s interview with the production designer of the film and here for Nylon Magazine’s interview with the lead graphic designer.

For someone who loves the visual and taste of bakery treats as much as I do, I was delighted (Pink Unicorn moment!) to find that if you purchase this film, one of the film extras is a video recipe for the bakery treat featured in the film.  A close copy to the film extra can be found by clicking here youtube.com link.  I am going to go look-up how much a flight to Dresden is; enjoy.
