Would the woman in this video consider her job as a Royal costume store curator to be a fantasy job? I am not sure, but I am sure in moments of completing my umpteenth piece of paperwork, that portion of my job has nothing to do with fantasy. I don’t even get to write fun words like “fantasy” or “whimsical” or even “mustache” in the documents I “create.”

Royal costume store archivist-curator?

Royal costume store archivist-curator?

Whimsical. Fantasy. Mustache.

I just wanted to write those words again. It felt good.  Being limited and confined to writing dry report documents can be mentally and emotionally painful.  Hence my brain escape to wondering what the world of a costume curator and perhaps archivist might be like.  Check out this short video featuring the curator of the Royal costume store explaining why/how clothes from the distant past inspire fashion and designers today.

After watching the video myself, I was inspired to google search “costume curator archivist dream job?” My search revealed interviews of individuals with said job discussing their current exhibit and one woman’s Linkedin profile. I enjoyed reading both. Nothing about whether or not it is a dream job though.  When I simplified to archivist, not specifying costume, I found an article that was kind of humorous.  I think the humor was unintentional, but read  “Honest tips for wannabe archivists out there” and decide for yourself.

My favorite and judged to be most humorous quote from the article link above is “Do not get into this field b/c you want to hide in the stacks & avoid people. Talking to people is both necessary & important.” The author also states you must get used to being cold all the time, which is not awesome, but I could deal with it(I heart leggings, cardigans, scarves, sleeve/handwarmers, and patterned tights).  Getting archivists’ lung is the only thing I learned from the article that sounds completely unappealing.  Anyway, I think it is impossible to know if being a costume curator-archivist would be a fantasy-dream job without actually doing it. Until then, I will stick to my current fantasy-dream job….finding pink unicorns. Yay!
